Creaking Like an Old Staircase?.
How to keep your joints happy
BY deia1 MIN READ
You stood up and your knees made a noise like a haunted house. Welcome.
Achy, stiff joints are a common complaint in this chapter. The good news: movement is one of the best things for them.
- Keep moving. Stiff joints usually feel better with regular movement, not less of it.
- Go low-impact. Swimming, water aerobics, cycling and walking are gentle on joints.
- Build strength. Stronger muscles support your joints. See The Guide No. 05.
- Stretch it out. Gentle stretching or yoga can help with stiffness.
- Warm up first. A few minutes of easy movement before exercise goes a long way.
- See your doctor if a joint is swollen, red, hot, or the pain doesn't settle. It's worth checking.
Creak proudly. Then keep dancing.
Move it, deia
